Frequently Asked Questions

What is counselling?

Counselling offers an opportunity to express and explore thoughts, emotions and ideas with someone other than a relative or a friend. Counselling provides a safe space to talk to a trained professional who will listen without judgement or criticism and keep what you say private and confidential (exceptions to this required by law will be outlined in the counselling contract and explained during the first session). Counsellors are trained to address clients’ issues and offer assistance by working through them in a positive way. Counsellors help you understand issues by helping put into words your thoughts and feelings, and support you to increase self-awareness, explore options and develop strategies. Just the process of telling their story and being listened to is therapeutic and helpful for some.

What is an introductory consultation?

An introductory consultation provides an opportunity for you and the counsellor to find more about each other. It is a chance for you to see if you feel comfortable working with the counsellor and to explore your goals from counselling. If you are happy to continue working with the counsellor, you can book further sessions. Book your first video or phone session.

How many sessions will I need?

Counselling can be short term or long term. For short term issues 6 - 8 sessions is recommended.

Will what I share be confidential?

Anything you discuss during a session is confidential. This means that everything you discuss with the counsellor is private, between you and the counsellor. Every effort will be taken to ensure the confidentiality and security of all information during all transactions. Details of any correspondence between you and the counsellor will not be shared with any other party without your prior knowledge, and consent except when legally or ethically obliged to do so.
