You are defined by more than your struggles

Compassionate counselling for people who need help navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, racial stress and more.

Hi, I’m Dr Amira Fathimath

PROFESSIONAL COUNSELLOR BASED IN AUCKLAND

I help you make sense of your current challenges and explore ways to move forward so you can live a meaningful, fulfilling and valued life.

My lived experiences provide me with an understanding of a diverse range of life's challenges. While my intersectionality gives me a genuine comprehension of cultural, ethnic and minority groups, I embrace individual differences and diversity regardless of religious, cultural, sexual and political orientations. I’m here to support you to explore and apply the appropriate tools and strategies to move forward with confidence and ease.

A safe, judgement-free setting where you’ll feel heard

Getting help can be difficult and scary. The stigma, the awkwardness, the undeserved shame. It takes strength to be vulnerable, explore your emotions and address challenging experiences.

By being my authentic easy-going self, I create a safe and supportive environment that encourages you to show up as yourself. Using psycho-education and a trauma-informed perspective, I help you understand your difficulties and discover practical solutions to overcome them.

Together we'll help you develop your confidence, break free from limiting beliefs and make purposeful yet positive changes to your life.

I never thought I could meet a counsellor who would whole heartily understand me and how my mind and soul works. The support you gave me to be able to breathe new air into my lungs and feel like my life isn't just for survival and that I'm allowed to live. I cannot thank you enough. You have changed my entire life... Helped me reform my bonds with my family... With myself... And with the world I'm in. I feel almost reborn and stronger. So much stronger.”

Areas I can support you in

Anxiety

Be it panic attacks, unrelenting worries or obsessive thoughts, remember that you don’t have to live with anxiety and worry. Unlike medication, counselling treats more than just the symptoms of the problem. I can help you uncover the underlying causes of your worries, learn effective coping strategies, and gain a new perspective for looking at situations in new and less frightening ways.

Racial stress

Experiencing racism and discrimination can have psychological impacts that lead to trauma. While racial stress might not be your main concern, it could be contributing to your distress. Together, we’ll explore and identify possible roles that racial stress and micro-aggressions might be playing in your life while applying strategies to process and heal from hidden wounds of racial trauma.

Feeling lost or stuck

The lack of direction or an unclear life purpose can cause a general feeling of indifference toward life. I help you clarify your personal values and goals to discover a purpose so you’ll not only experience life with renewed motivation, but you’ll also be able to restructure challenging situations into opportunities for growth.

Depression

Is your depression keeping you from living the life you want to? I help you work through the root of your depression and understand what your triggers are and why you feel a certain way. You’ll develop skills and insight to feel better, happier, and more hopeful while reducing the likelihood of your depression coming back.

Low self-confidence

Self-esteem contributes greatly to our mental well-being and can impact us from following our goals and finding fulfilling relationships. Self-esteem issues are often ingrained in harmful self-criticism. If you are experiencing low self-confidence, self-worth self-doubt, shame or inadequacy, I can help you identify false beliefs rooted in negative self-talk, reduce criticism of yourself and increase self-compassion so you can rise to your potential.

Trauma

I help you explore your thoughts and feelings relating to a traumatic experience, and manage your symptoms and painful memories so you can feel safe again. Together, we’ll work towards acceptance, growth, healing and moving forward.
